perfect pansies (not) blackout technique

Hello crafty friends. Here is my latest set of cards for Paper Rose Studio. I have been making sets of cards lately, and it’s been amazing how they’ve stretched my creativity. All these cards were made using the beautiful Perfect Pansies 3D Embossing Folder from Paper Rose Studio, but this technique works with many different embossing folders.

These cards started as a set of standard ‘blackout technique’ cards. To make this type of card, you ink blend a rainbow onto some white cardstock, then run it through and embossing folder in your die cutting machine. Next, you darken all the areas that are not part of the raised design. You can do this in several ways. I’ve coloured the background with marker in the past, but this time, I swiped my ink pad across the inside of one side of the embossing folder, and carefully ran it through my die cutting machine again. Traditionally, this is done with a dark colour, like this Faded Jeans example below.

I decided to try a mid tone ink, Speckled Egg, and the photo below shows this. I used Distress Inks for the blending underneath (anything would work), but I found that Distress Oxides worked best for the top layer, because they sat on top of the other inks, rather than sinking into the paper and blending with them. I’ll list all the colours I used below.

Finally, I chose the lightest ink I own! This is Spun Sugar, and I think it made my favourite card of the set. What do you think? The sentiments are all from Paper Rose, and are part of a whole range of sentiments in the same style, including some Christmas sentiments, like ‘joy’ and ‘peace’. I used the Fancy Script Hello and Thanks dies for these cards, layering them up with vellum for two of the cards, which involved millions of very thin strips of foam tape. Not for the faint hearted- Black and white is much simpler!

So there you have it, my (not) blackout technique for embossing folders, using soft gentle colours.

Until next time,

May your days be gentle,

Blessings,

Donna
