Colouring on patterned papers

Hello my crafty friends. How are you all doing? I am head down, tail up with study for a Japanese exam in just 3 DAY’S TIME!!!!! I’ve been studying hard, and I’ve passed all the practice tests I’ve done, but I still need to do the work on the day to get the score. The exam is a Japanese proficiency exam, the N1. It’s the last exam there is, so once I’ve done it, I can relax, knowing there are no more! The study has been super helpful in helping me read Japanese novels, which is my real aim.

I have cards to share with you today that use patterned paper as their base. No floral stamps were harmed (or even used) in the making of these cards! The paper is from the Urban Garden paper pack from Paper Rose Studio. I have previously made a set of nine slimline cards from this paper, and as I was making them, I was thinking that this particular paper would be great to colour. You can see the blog post for the original nine cards here, or the video of the making process here.

I cut two panels from the Urban Garden paper with the large blooms printed in black. There are two different papers (and 2 sheets of each design) that you could use this technique on, the one I chose, and another with smaller images, which, when you consider the price point of a similar stamp, and the fact that you can get at least 16 cards like this from the 12 x 12 paper pack, as well as the rest of the paper for other cards, the price point is actually very good. These cards are cards 10 to 14 that I’ve made with with this paper pack, and I still have pretty much exactly half of the pack left.

I coloured using a rainbow mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils, and I coloured opposite parts of the image. For the card above, I coloured everything except the flowers, working lightly and in rainbow order, shading gently in layers. There will be a video of the making of these cards coming, AFTER my exam! For the second card, I coloured the flowers, and left the background blank. I added more layers, and a heavier hand with the pencils to get a more vibrant colours. I used the same rainbow, but I frequently put the colour order into reverse order, so that most of the leaves were mostly green and the flowers had the more pink and red tones.

I cut the panels with stitched rectangle dies, and layered them onto card bases. I added sentiments from two different sentiment packs from Paper Rose Studio – Rainbow Poppies, and Big Black and White sentiments. When I cut the panels out, I had two strips of coloured paper left, and I didn’t want to waste them, so there are two bonus cards, one of which turned out to be my favourite card! I paired the panels with some Pink and Main Enamel dots in a rainbow of colours, and some sentiments, from the Rainbow Poppies Sentiments pack and one stamped sentiment from the Tulips stamp set.

I look forward to editing the footage of the making go these cards and getting the video up. They were fun to make, and I’d love to see where people take the idea of colouring on patterned paper. I wonder what patterned papers you have in your stash that would make good colouring cards?

Until next time, may your days be full of colour!

Blessings,
Donna
